Annual Beach Clean-up...

HMS Beach Clean Up

On Saturday, September 30th the staff and students from HMS volunteered two hours of their weekend time to help clean the Hudson River shoreline. Over 130 students, 15 faculty members, and many parents turned out for the fourteenth annual clean-up. In addition, North Rockland leaders/community members including Dr. Monahan, Mr. Gillies, and Mr. Phillips assisted in the clean-up. We collected trash/debris along the Greenway Trail, which runs for about 1 mile along the Hudson River. In total over 6,000 lbs. of garbage was found! Some interesting items found include two mattresses, the frame of a riding lawn mower, a large metal birdcage, a typewriter, drug pipes, and bones that may have come from a cow?!! To reward the students for all their hard work, representatives from the Sierra Club, Water Sentinels, and Keep Rockland Beautiful gave each student a Sierra Club backpack and a Water Sentinel t-shirt. As in previous years, the two hours went by quickly and everyone had a great time helping to make their community cleaner and more beautiful.
